Applying to the Graduate Program

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of Women's & Gender Studies as a program of study, admission to our graduate program is open to many who did not major in this field as undergraduates. In compiling your application materials, please reflect on your coursework, academic projects, and relevant life experiences that have prepared you to pursue a graduate degree in Women's & Gender Studies.

To be considered for admission to the Master's program in Women's & Gender Studies, you must submit an online application and college transcripts to the UNT Toulouse Graduate School. In addition, please submit supporting materials to the Women's & Gender Studies Program. Only complete applications will be considered for admission decisions.

Rolling Admissions

We encourage you to apply early to secure your place in our graduate program. We have rolling admissions and begin accepting applications on the dates listed below for Fall admission. We continue accepting applications until all places in the graduate program are filled. Please note that international applicants must follow priority deadlines set by the University of North Texas, which is April 1st for Fall semester.

For Fall semesters: Application review for the Fall admissions begins January 15, and continues until available slots are filled.

For Spring semesters: At this time, we are no longer admitting students for Spring.

Required Application Materials

Please follow directions provided by the UNT Toulouse Graduate School for all institutionally required materials:

  1. An online application through ApplyTexas. Graduate School application fee is due at the time of application.
  2. Applicants typically have a 3.0 GPA or higher on the last 60 undergraduate semester hours from their bachelor's degree. The admissions committee strives to evaluate candidates holistically. Applicants who have lower GPAs will be considered by individual review for provisional admission.
  3. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities that you have attended.
  4. International students must demonstrate English language proficiency. Minimum TOEFL score requirement is 79; Minimum IELTS score is 6.5. UNT-International provides a complete list of ways to demonstrate English language proficiency.

Please submit the following items directly to the Women's & Gender Studies Program:

  1. An application letter that includes a statement in which you address your purpose in pursuing graduate study in the Women's & Gender Studies Program at UNT. Include your professional plans, career goals, background in topics/theories related to Women's & Gender Studies, and areas of research interest relevant to our program
  2. A current vita or resume in which you address the following areas (as applicable):
    - Educational background
    - Previous work & leadership experience
    - Publications, performances, exhibitions, or other scholarly activities
    - Previous research experience, including publications
    - Involvement in community activities
  3. Two signed letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your academic and/or professional abilities. At least one letter must be from a professor who can speak to your academic capacities and potential to succeed in graduate study; one letter may be submitted by a current or past employer. Academic references are preferred. The writer should submit their letter directly to the department.
  4. A scholarly writing sample from an upper-level undergraduate course or an honor's thesis. The writing sample should demonstrate your proficiency at conducting and reporting research.

International Applicants

The UNT International office can help guide our international applicants through the application process, ensuring that non-U.S. students understand all university and national requirements related to pursuing a graduate degree at UNT.

International applicants are encouraged to apply to UNT's Women's & Gender Studies Program by the following dates to increase your chance of I-20 processing, if admitted.
